Adventure Destinations Close to Home:

Is it on your new year's resolution list to get out and do more in 2024, but you also plan to budget better? Whether you are a local or new to the area, there are a number of outdoor options close to home that cost little to nothing and are absolutely gorgeous! Continue reading for information on just a few of our favorite locations:

Klamath River Rafting:

Are you looking for an adrenaline rush? Klamath River is one of the largest in California and the premier whitewater rafting spot in northern California. You’ll navigate rapids and plunge into the pulsating “Hell’s Corner Canyon.” This non-stop roller coaster ride will keep you on the edge of your seat and push your adrenaline to the max.

Mount Shasta:

This monumental mountain is one of the most iconic places in Northern California. This is a potentially active volcano that rises over 14,000 feet above sea level. It dominates the landscape for miles – on a clear day, it can be seen from nearly 140 miles away! During warm weather you can find over 50 trails within the area. In addition, winter often presents great skiing/snowboarding conditions!

Shasta Caverns:

A large portion of the Shasta Cascade region was been created by volcanic activity and that means there are lots of caves formed by tubes of lava, including:

  • Lake Shasta Caverns National Natural Landmark where you can take a boat ride before exploring the ancient limestone caves
  • Subway Cove, an easily accessible lava tube with a self-guided trail
  • Lava Beds National Monument – over 800 caves, Native American art and historic battlefields. There are caves for beginners to advanced explorers, including a crystal ice cave in the winter

Lassen Volcanic National Park:

There are lots of hiking trails to the hydrothermal features, including the easily accessible Sulphur Works (where you can see fumaroles from the car park), and the popular Bumpass Hell trail, which is a gentle 3-mile hike that takes you past bubbling mud and turquoise pools, and has incredible views of Lassen Peak. This is definitely a destination to add to your adventure list!

Castle Crags State Park:

These rugged peaks located in Castella, stand out as unique in the region. The 6,000-foot tall crags that were created by glaciers offer 28 miles of hiking trails and spectacular views of the area

Shasta and Whiskey Town Lakes:

Whiskeytown lake and recreational area is a gorgeous park featuring a large lake and historical town, as well as a plethora of outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, waterfall sites, and much more! Shasta Lake and Historical Park will offer museums and ruin tours as well as waterfall sites and cave tours. These locations are a must see!

If you are looking to adventure more this year, these are just a few of the locations and activities we would recommend. The Northern California area is filled with jaw dropping views, and awe inspiring locations to visit! Add these to your new years list of escapades!
